Yale Fleet receives sustainability awards and ‘Rising Star’ status

November 3, 2016

Yale Fleet was recognized recently for its sustainability and efficiency efforts with two awards, the NCSFA Environmental Leadership Award and the Bobit Business Media Fleet Technology Expo Award. It was also given “Rising Star” status by the Northeastern Clean Cities Coalitions.

At the Fleet Technology Expo, sponsored by Bobit Business Media, Yale Fleet won the Light and Medium-Duty Sustainability Fleet Award. This award was given to Yale for its innovative use of telematics technology to monitor vehicle uses and manage costs and for its use of alternative fuel vehicles reducing emissions and cutting fuel consumption by almost 25%.

This is the first year the Fleet Technology Expo presented awards designed to recognize fleets for their contributions to environmental sustainability and overall efficiency practices demonstrated through strong leadership and with a willingness to explore new technologies. George Longyear, Director of Yale Housing and Fleet, attended the Expo to collect the award.

Since 1999, the NCSFA Environmental Leadership Award is given annually to a (National Conference of State Fleet Administrators) member that has demonstrated sustained contributions to the advancement and use of alternative fuels and who has contributed to the overall quality of their fleet. The 2016 award went to the Yale Fleet for its many green initiatives including:

  • Partnering with the Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition
  • Getting NAFA accreditation
  • Reducing the overall fleet size by 30 vehicles
  • Introducing alternative fuel vehicles to the Yale Fleet
  • Converting diesel and gas fueled fleet vehicles to CNG
  • Greenhouse gas emissions reduction
  • Use of a Telematics fleet monitoring program

“We are very excited about being recognized for our efforts at having a greener fleet. My team and I will continue to look for efficiencies and cost savings in the fleet,” said Longyear.

Yale Fleet was also recognized as a “Rising Star” in New England by the Northeastern Clean Cities Coalitions for its efforts in cutting carbon emissions, reducing the use of petroleum, and promoting and utilizing alternative fuels to power its vehicles. The Northern Stars of the Northeast program is funded through a U.S. Department of Energy.
